Missouri bullets #4 whitetail Hunter in 30-30

Post by 2guns » Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:56 pm

I just ordered 250 of these to try out. No gas checks. Only manual I have is a Hodgdon monthly magazine that shows around a 17 grain charge of imr 3031. My Hornady and Sierra only show jacketed loads. I know I need to buy the Lyman book but this is first bottleneck with lead bullets. Anyone had any experience in a 30-30 with these bullets?

Not with those but every time I tried lead cast w/o a gas check in 30-30 I didnt have much luck. Might of been just me at the time but when I went to gas checks I had much better results. Mike Venturino shooting lever guns of the old west also made comments as to having better success in the 30-30 with gas check bullets. Not sure what charge you are looking at but many comment on low charges of unique and universal clays for just some plinking loads. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I use unique in 45 but have seen no data for a 30-30. I don't know enough about these but wouldn't unique leave a big empty space in the cartridge. I emailed Missouri several times trying to find which bullet and hardness and these are what they suggested saying lubed enough not to need gas checks. But they are trying to sell bullets.

Did you order the coated #4 Whitetail Hi-tech bullets?
My preference is H4198 for cast lead 30-30 loads.

I worry about that small amount of IMR_3031 in a 30-30 case even if using a magnum primer. Maybe worry is to strong a word . I think 3031 coed be very inconsistent in less that 50 percent density.

I was wondering if you ordered the #4 bullets with the Hi-tech coating or the un-coated bullets.
The coated bullets can be loaded to a few 100 fps higher muzzle velocity without fear of leading the barrel.

Missouri Bullet company`s off the shelf #4 are sized to .311 to suit A Marlin`s Micrgroov rifling.

These are for a micro groove Marlin. I ordered the .452 for the Henry. They shoot okay with H4895 at 22 grains to 28 grains. No flaring die yet but found a fired 270 case with a few twists made perfect neck size. Cases are pretty blackened with soot at lower powder charges. Now to see how much the lead the barrel. I'm ocd when it comes to cleaning guns. I will try and chronograph a few tomorrow. Super heavy lube on the 30-30 and 45.
Crimped with a Lee crimp die. No shaving of lead and pulled one after loading and bullet not crushed anywhere.

At the range my accuracy peaked at about 1425 fps using 1 grains of h4895. Not long range bullet but close enough for 100 yards with right shot placement. Going to do some cleaning today and see how much leading I got out of 50 rounds.

Not that particular bullet.
But have been working on a cast load for a couple 30-30's lately.
Using a 170 GC'ed cast, so far the best results has been with IMR 4198.
Got some 3031 but haven't tried it yet,
the BL-c 2 wasn't bad and with a little more time may prove suitable.

I think I could get a little more velocity with the 4198 but haven't found any yet. Lgs said he hopes next week. I'm spending more time trying hs6 and unique in my Henry 45 right now. I wish I had gas checked bullets for both. I've got 250 Missouri 165 gr and 500 each of the 255 Lasercast and Rock river bullets. No gas checks on any but it was my first go at shooting lead. I'll know better next time. I've got 3031 but was Leary of half filled case. The h4895 is a little more forgiving.
