So far I've been able to grab hold of a higher shelf and use it to help pull myself back up.

I'm probably not alone on this one.
... when at the store, squatting or kneeling down to look at that bottom shelf; too hard to get back up. Don't know of a trick or fix for that one.

My thing is with multi-colored masking tape. I use small snips of the stuff to mark hard to distinguish buttons on electronics and larger strips on storage containers, etc. Wife didn't take kindly to my earlier use of finger nail polish and permanent marker directly on things. Sometimes I hear about my over use of the tape, particularly yellow.
I also have a cheap pair of reading glasses I got off a grocery store end cap. They came in tube. My regular progressive lens don't work for close up work, insufficient near sight focus range.

This one for getting old only because when you get older so do your kids. When they leave home you don't have those extra helping hands when you need them. In place of them I find my self making temporary support jigs instead.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

In time sequence, beer, whiskey, and tequila, I grew tolerant, took too much to do it. I don't bother with those too much anymore. Now it's 100 proof Smirnoff Silver and sometimes 151.

Same problem here especially when the info I'm trying to read on the bottom shelf is still to far away to read with my bi-focals. When I'm doing outside work I'm finding it's helpful to have my walking stick or a shovel to stand back up.

I have progressive lenses in my glasses that help in the seeing dept. What is left of my hair I use a bar of soap on. I guess when you reach the the point of no return it gets more simple.
