Coleman Lantern

Post by Mistered » Tue Sep 17, 2019 11:34 pm

While taking a break from some other demanding projects I decided to disassemble, clean and repaint the tank on one of my old Coleman lanterns.
It was starting to rust and pit on the bottom so I want to halt it before it rusts completely through.
I never noticed it before but after I wire wheeled the paint off the bottom the logo is interesting and says 'The sunshine of the night'

Three of them hang on hooks on my front deck, ready to go in case of a power outage.

Do your mantles stay in good shape hanging outside all the time?

I need to get a new globe for mine, it got broken a while back.

Yea - as long as the globe is intact and the lanterns are under cover.
I have had mantles last a couple years as long as the lanterns are stationary and not moved around too much.

.
The ones I rarely use run off a propane bottle. The one used more frequently runs off a rechargeable battery. It's an older decent looking kerosene look alike. I've tried to find another one, but the new models don't look anything like a traditional kerosene lantern.

I went 'LP' for a few years - even made my own extensions that coupled onto a couple 1 LB size tanks so I wasn't hostage to the disposable cylinders but after several years of use the cheaper, aluminum LP styles got bent up, unreliable and the output of LP lanterns is not near that of traditional 'white gas' style.
Then I suddenly had three traditional lanterns given to me - two singles and one double mantle style so I went back to using them.
I have always used 'clear' gas in them so again I do not have to pay the horrible price for 'Coleman Fuel' - which is basically a clear gas derivative without the additives normally in gasoline.

"Crown" white gas sold at wal-mart. Made in the same plant. Half the price.

I still have the Coleman lantern by dad bought back in '68 or so. Globe is broken and no mantles but I'm sure it still works. Does Coleman still sell replacement globes?
