Old Glory may be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today. This represents America honoring the approximately 3,000 people who lost their lives during the 9/11/01 WTC attacks. Today's focus also includes the remembrance of the service members, 1st responders, and ordinary Americans at the NY site, who risked their own lives to save others.

I had business in a city this morning. It could have been anywhere I suppose. A group of very high ranking police officials were waiting to go to a local 9/11 ceremony. I had to walk through them as I passed. I said "good morning gentlemen". Not a solitary response. There were enough stars on their collars to make a night sky jealous. After I attended to my business, I happened to pass the ceremony before it started. Attended by the aforementioned brass and joined by the firemen also. There were volunteer firemen and others in a group behind the paid firemen and police officers. As I departed, more "ordinary Americans" came to the gathering to watch.

I felt sadness for the event and sadness for the ordinary Americans who were not being paid to attend the event, but took time out of their days to attend the ceremony. I have no problem with the paid folk attending. Many emergency responders were lost that day. Many more "ordinary Americans" lost their lives and pitched in to help out that day and the ensuing days. As I left, the sadness for the civilian crowd gathering turned to pride, knowing most of these souls would do what others had done in the big city years past.

Thank you for your post Bob. You too are making me feel proud.

With the fight over border security, I am thinking that we have forgot. Or, I am missing something. But, may this never happen again. I remember being in leadership training when I received the news. The next day, I was recalled to the ship for deployment off the coast. It was a solemn day.

I vividly remember that day. I recall the shock and anger I felt at the attacks as well as the sadness for all the victims and pride for the response by firemen, medical personnel, the police and volunteers.

Countless strangers helping strangers, all ethnicity, all political stripes, all walks of life, just because it was the right thing to do.

Agreed, remember.
