This was an amazing weather photo taken by a lady in VA last Tuesday. Never knew this pattern existed. Sure is a beautiful sight. Enjoy.

Amazing is right! We get some interesting patterns out here in the Owens Valley when summer thunderstorms roll thru. But,those in Va were something else.

Billow clouds or shear-gravity clouds. Clouds that form between the interface of two masses of air moving at different velocities. Technically called Kelvin-Helmholtz Clouds. The upper mass of air is moving at a more rapid velocity than the lower mass of air. Very unstable. You don't want to fly through these!! Made famous my Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night."
