I too think Red River and The Searchers were the two best John Wayne movies, hard to say which was the best of the two.

The Cheyenne Social Club, free here.... https://vimeo.com/156976122

Overall it’s a fairly silly fluff of a movie, but the dialog is terrific. Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda make perfect sidekicks....

The give and take reminds me a lot of Lonesome Dove. For example.

Referring to the Cattle Creek sign.

Woodrow Call:
...and if that ain't bad enough you got all them Greek words on there, too.

Gus McCrae:
I told you, Woodrow, a long time ago it ain't Greek, it's Latin.

Woodrow Call:
Well what does it say in Latin? [Gus blusters some gibberish] For all you know it invites people to rob us.

Gus McCrae:
Well the first man comes along that can read Latin is welcome to rob us, far as I'm concerned. I'd like a chance to shoot at a educated man once in my life.

Gus character had the best lines....Newt says Woodrow hasn't mentioned being his father after Gus told him..."Well, Woodrow ain't much of a mentioner when he can avoid it."

Truly one of the greatest westerns ever.

I started to watch the new version of '3:10 to Yuma' the other night - but fell asleep! What I saw of it I liked - as I like both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale and will catch it again soon.

Another really offbeat western is 'Seraphim Falls' with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Watch it if you have a chance.

Didn't know there was a newer 3:10 to Yuma. Enjoyed the first one though. Will have to look for it.

Wow Ed, maybe it WAS the newer one I saw. Been a while. Will have to watch it again. I like Crowe also, just don't remember Christian Bale being in it. I like him as well! Probably just part of my old man memory loss. ;)

I’m not sure I knew there was an “old” one! Not really surprised though, as Hollyweird seems to be having a hard time with originality of late. The past 15 years or so seems to be fairly full of remakes.
