the pictures in my post above were taken about 10:45 this morning .... the ones shown below were taken before 1:30pm .... as can be seen, the water is now over the road .... that's as high as it gets for us .... the other side of the road drops off into a pretty deep valley (for lack of better term) that runs for miles and the bottom of which is at least 90' below the road ... having water go over the road takes a very significant rain but does happen from time to time

Well, it turned into a non event here. Light winds, light rain all day. We get worse in an afternoon thunderstorm.

Just some thots as I watched an early Sunday news program this morning, which showed pictures of extensive flooding over much of the Carolinas and surrounding states. Of course, no one knows what's coming, but the warnings of increasingly dangerous flooding abound.

The stat that was a shocker to me this morning (how do they figure this?) was that the estimate of rain water that will be dumped from Florence in the next few days, will be approximately 18 trillion gallons. This statement was made so folk could understand how much water that is: "...as much water as fills the Chesapeake Bay." Astounding!

In comparison, I probably shouldn't complain so much about the ongoing summer heat and drought here in the Heartland.

that's most certainly a lot of water .. .. we are still getting our share of it .... we have been within the rain/wind bands of Florence since Thursday afternoon .... the center of the storm is moving through South Carolina but the entire state of North Carolina is still within its reach .... just the latest forecast calls for it to curve northward so that it will pass through the NC/SC/TN mountains .... just spoke with my sister in Asheville and it is raining there .... as it curves to the northeast, the projection is for us to remain within Florence's rain/wind until sometime on Wednesday .... I've said it before and will say it again, we've never seen a storm like this before

delighted to be able to report that for the first time in a week we had patches of clear blue sky for most of the day .... right now we can hear the rumble of thunder in the distance and according to weather radar we could easily have a visit from a thunderstorm around 3AM .... after tonight, we are most happy to see no more rain in the forecast for a week or so .... rivers from our area to the cost will continue to rise for a couple of days and that's very bad news for the folks along the river banks .... this is the first time I've seen flooded roads completely cut Wilmington off from the rest of the state .... a major resupply effort (including food flown in) is underway .... Florence has been responsible for at least 32 deaths – 25 in North Carolina, six in South Carolina, and one in Virginia .... sadly, that number is expected to rise in the coming days
