Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
Just a passing chat for the lounge. Not a "good news" story; just interesting to think about.
There are four people mentioned in this brief article about living beyond the century mark.
https://www.insideedition.com/worlds-ol ... apan-45452
The interesting points:
~~~What an unusual job persons have at Guinness World Records to track, record, and certify who goes into these titled stats.
~~~There are 3 women and 1 man listed. Maybe there are others elsewhere in the world that Guinness or the governments do not yet know about?
~~~All four are Japanese. It's known that many Japanese enjoy fish. Could a primary diet of fish contribute to the longevity and/or better health?
~~~Many of the recent live interviews I've seen have shown a good number of centenarians are just plain 'ole happy people. That good attitude and laughter in their lives has got to be a really good thing -- and would be so for everyone!!
My Dad just missed his 97th birthday (2012) by about 3-1/2 months. I've often thought about what life as a centenarian, or an almost-centenarian would be like, feel like. Looking back over a century of memories has got to bring a fascinating perspective!
OK, just lounge trivia for a Friday.
Have a great week-end, Everyone.

Re: Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
My step-dad passed in 2013 at 98. WWII Vet, saw action in Market Garden and Battle of the Bulge. He was in very good physical and mental health until about 3 months before his passing. Something switched off and he quickly went down hill. His diet, ate lean. Did not have the paper delivered. Instead walked to the local convenience store every day for the paper.

Re: Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
My paternal grandmother is 94, still has here divers licence, still mows the lawn twice a week.
She has always been quite active and continues to be as active as possible. Goes out socialising a least once a week, doesn't mind a drink, a scotch or two every evening. She has had a few reminders she isn't as young as she was. Fell off a ladder with a little electric chainsaw when she was about 80. Didn't do any serious damage but realised it was time to give up pruning trees. Fell a couple of years back dragging the lawnmower from the back yard to the front around garbage cans and her car in the garage. Shattered her femur, doctors were quite concerned on how she would recover giver her age. They put in a rod and she was up and walking on it with the aid of a frame the next day and back to her normal spritely self within a few months.
She was one of 10 children, grandfather was one of 11, they are all gone she has one sister in law left still alive.
She had never been camping until she was 87, my brother purchased a farm without any buildings, she came down for a week and loved it. Tent and camp stretcher but there is power so they had refrigeration and a electric kettle. More comforts than when she was growing up. Still remember everyone complaining when we got a torrential downpour while she happily sat in the dry spot she had found with a bottle of scotch and a 2lb trout I had caught from the creek and smoked.
I have a few bee hives, want to try and get her to help with extraction this summer, her father had a few hives and has told us few stories of extracting and working bees as a child but hasn't done it for nearly 80 years.

I have an Aunt that is 92 and shows no sign of slowing down. Sharp as a tack too. I have ask her about things sometimes. She remembered everything. Still drives and goes to parties. She smoked into her 60s. Finally gave it up. Eats anything she wants.

My mom and her dad were both relatively healthy into their 90's. I remember my grandfather walked to town every day to play cards with his cronies. I don't believe he was much of a drinker but he did smoke cigars and a pipe all his life. Hopefully I got my longevity genes from them, most of my aunts and uncles from both sides of my family died relatively young (late 60's). My brother is 13 years older than me and still doing OK at 78.

All the heavy drinkers and heavy cigarette smokers in my family died young. Although my grandfather lived into his 90's, rolled his own Prince Albert cigarettes. Used a cigarette holder that had a filter cavity that he put corn meal in.

I don't think she ought to be diving at 94!220 wrote:My paternal grandmother is 94, still has here divers licence, still mows the lawn twice a week.

Re: Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
Funny you should say that she thought the same a couple of years back and asked for her licence to be changed to a restricted licence that only allows her to drive within a certain distance of home. She did have a unrestricted licence until into her 90's.
Its not a case of simply paying to renew your licence in my state, once you reach a 75 you need a medical every 2 years, from 85 you need a medical every year and pass a driving test every 2 years.
Anyone over 85 still driving on a unrestricted licence is probably a better driver than a lot on the road for the simple reason that there is no driving assessment after people graduate onto a unrestricted licence at around 20yo until they hit 85 and have to start resitting driving tests.

Re: Longevity in the one-hundred teens!
You misread my post. You posting said that she still has her DIVERS license. That means she is still capable of SCUBA diving at her age, which I think is likely a bad idea. I'm all for people continuing to enjoy outdoor sports as they get older, but one must exercise a little common sense with the limitations that come with age.220 wrote:Funny you should say that she thought the same a couple of years back and asked for her licence to be changed to a restricted licence that only allows her to drive within a certain distance of home.
