Shooting/Hunting in Austraila
Re: Shooting/Hunting in Austraila
Went to the club and shot pistol over the weekend.
Match for the day was ISSF centrefire, last time I can remember shooting in a comp was nearly 3 years ago. Havent done any regular shooting or training for 5 or 6 years so didn't expect to much in the way of results.
Hold wasn't great, think I was holding about the 8 ring at best, trigger squeeze was OK about 80% of the time but most targets were along the lines of 10,9,9,8,5 or 10,10,9,8,3. Rapid fire stage was a little better 260/300 wasn't coming up on the centre of the target but just accepting the sight picture I had and squeezing reasonably well.
Ended up shooting 506/600 and the wife 499/600 shooting womens 25m.
Somehow we got talked into putting entries in for state championships in 2 weeks time, at least they are shot in grade and we aren't that far off our grading scores.

Got in a bit of hunting over the last few weeks, managed this little bloke yesterday. Would be a great freezer filler but I rolled a hind last week and my freezer is over flowing. Will keep the back straps and eye fillets and have few people who will take the rest.
Great thing about hunting the farm is the tractor recovery. Usually near dark by the time I get back to the house to collet the tractor, much easier and cleaner to gut them hanging. Leave them to set overnight before skinning and quatering the next morning then let hang and age for a week or so in the cool room.

With the weather starting to cool off Im starting to think about chasing deer. With that in mind I put up a couple of cameras last weekend and checked them this morning.
Camera in the same spot as last year only had 6 pictures on it all containing sambar hinds.
New camera I put out in a new spot about 200y away it had 171 triggers, 140 of which contained pictures of sambar, no big blokes but as best as I can tell 9 different animals, a half grown calf, hinds, a couple of spikiers and a few little stags.
All the activity between 8pm and 6.30am, a few sequences where 3 or 4 animals went past in 90 seconds
Always like pics with a couple in the frame, this is probably the best for the week.

That last guy is a FAT deer! How many lbs / kgs of meat would you get off one that size?

More than enough to top up my freezer, lol sambar are regarded as the 3rd largest deer by size/weight behind moose and elk. Mature stags like the one in the picture will usually go 600-800lbs although they have been recorded over 1200lbs. Here in Aus anything with 26"+ antlers is regarded as a good trophy, the one pictured still has some growing to do, I doubt he would be much more than 16".
They are a bit unusual in that they dont heard like most deer species and dont have a fixed rut or breading season, Usually see them solo or a doe with a youngster in tow, Given they all walked past the camera within 1 min the doe may well be in heat with the young spiker and more mature stag close by.

If the quality of the meat was your first consideration when hunting this species, what animal would you select (trophy, young buck, doe)?
FYI, I have never hunted, even though I have been qualified and purchase a license each year. My back is just not up to the task any longer. I wish I could. Thanks.

I prefer the younger animals if I am after meat. No different to domestic stock in that they tend to be a bit better eating
