I remember one of those from my childhood. One of the women stayed on the phone All the time, my mother would finally have to ask her to hang up because she needed to make a call.
"Who are you calling?"

None of your business.

"Are you going to be long?"

Not all day like some people...

The woman would hang up, then softly pick up a minute or so into the call and listen in.

Yup. With a party line, you had no reason to expect privacy, but (unlike today ) you knew it! Our phone number was two rings; others were one or three (or more).
