vole or mole may well be right but the folks in the area where these pictures were taken have a different name for them

Moles, by the nature of those mounds with no plugs. Gophers leave a plug of dirt in the mound. Voles leave an open hole.

the local folks call them gopher mounds .... as noted above, these are different from the ones I'm used to seeing in South Dakota .... those have a ring of dirt surrounding an entrance/exit in the center ..... the moles back home tunnel just under the surface of the ground and leave ridge that shows where have been
