The 7-30 waters

Post by Oldbrass » Thu Feb 25, 2021 4:42 pm

Got a friend whos son shoots a 7-30 waters, a Winny 94 I think, every deer he's pointed it at fell down. My LGS had a box of leverevolution ammo and snagged it for him..Wonder why this caliber never gained more popularity, I've never seen one for sale.. anybody use one?

I have never owned or shot one so no personal experience. However back in the 80’s it was pretty popular with handgun silhouette shooters. I believe T/C chambered the Contender in 7-30 Waters and I’m sure some chambered it in their unlimited guns (generally bolt action 15” single shot pistols) but I don’t remember. Sounds like it’s a great deer cartridge and happy you found a box.

On paper it is a great cartridge. I think with some of powders like Lver and FCE 223 you could get some great velocities and still keep the pressure down. I wonder how much a new barrel would be to re- barrel a 30-30 336?

I remember when it came out and it was a hit with the TC folks. I never played with it or knew anybody who had one but it sure did get alot of press.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Yes, it was a big hit with Contender folks. I shot a 14" Contender in 7-30 for several years. Very accurate and a little nicer shooting in a Contender than the 30-30, the parent cartridge. Very popular for hunting and silhouette in a Contender. Just never caught on with the lever gun crowd. In a pinch, easy to make 7-30 brass from 30-30 brass.

I bet the BFR folks could make a revolver for it!
