Good to know that availability isn't an issue; sorry for being so ill-informed.

Anyway, knowing that, here's a fairly typical thread that I came across by searching Mossberg 930 vs. Weatherby SA-08. It's fairly typical in that it highlights fit early on as a key purchase criteria, and that the debate can quickly get off-track, but it's threads like this that were good food for thought as I have been doing my O/U research...

Not to send you further down the rabbit-hole, but this model comes up a lot. Gas-operated, shims and spacers for fitting purposes, same general price range as the others:

Wow, those guys on "snipershide" don't hide their displeasure much! Of the three S/A's mentioned, the Beretta a-300 is the better, followed by the Weatherby. I have a 930, it's the discontinued "Duck Commander" model and haven't had a lick of problems with it. I'm thinking that model may have had some factory up grades to it. If I had to do it over, I'd buy either the Beretta or Weatherby. First choice a-300. All the newer 12ga semi-auto's have been designed to recoil less[softly]. The gas one's.

No, Tom, they're not nearly as genteel as this fine group! Pretty tame by other forums' standards, however, as I'm sure you know!

The Beretta seems very nice, gets good marks and seems like a good value.

I haven’t had a single issue with my Mossberg either. The thing is, the specific model I want, doesn’t seem (despite my previous assertion) to be readily available near me. I found it online from Grab-a-gun for way below msrp though, so I may buy from them and get it sent up. It’s $250 to export, which will take it to just $35 over msrp. My main hang-up with the one I want is it’s a perfect blend of field and turkey, with a slight (2”) barrel length penalty for ducks. A 28” barrel is too long for the turkey woods, so with the Beretta or most other brands, you get a 28 and then might be able to get a 24 later for another few hundred. The Mossberg from GaG is $425!

Total shot in the dark, but I'm guessing you're looking at this one?

Seems like a great deal, very versatile.

Good shot E2, that’s the one. They even dropped the price $3 since last night. I’ve started to look at the standard matte blued 930 with 28” barrel and f/o front sight, and then buying a turkey barrel, but the extra barrels run $225 for blued, and $263 for camo. Not exactly a cheap add on. I’m hoping one of the 2 distributors up here comes through with the one you linked.

Pretty much zero love for a Mossberg in the snipershide thread. I may look at Stoeger as they seem to be rated better than Mossberg or Weatherby. I know I should just buy a Beretta, but I don’t want to spend $3,000 on a shotgun that will see maybe 50 shells per year.

I don't know about availability or regs in Canada but for your use, have you considered looking for a good preowned semi auto .... after firing ours, one of my brother-in-laws recently purchased a 25 year old Remington 11-87 .... I haven't ever asked but I'd be willing to bet a Coke that he paid somewhere around $300 (probably less) for it .... its a sold shooter .... here is a link to one much like it for sale ===> https://www.gunauction.com/buy/16195727 .... note, the link is time sensitive so I don't know how long it will be valid

I’ve been looking at used as well. It’s either super low end stuff, or $2500 Berettas at the moment. If something good comes along (with thread in chokes) I’ll jump on it. I’ve messaged two different guys quite far away to see if they will ship. I’m also only looking for a gas gun, so that narrows the choices.
