Mossberg 500, 590, or 590A1.....which one?

Post by Joezilla » Tue Sep 26, 2017 5:29 pm

Okay, I have moved away from the thoughts of purchasing a Mossberg Shockwave to now wanting the more traditional 500, 590, or 590A1.

I would appreciate any thoughts you folks would care to share about which model you own and pros/cons of each.

Thanks,
Joe

I'm not a fan of pump shotguns (regardless of brand) .... I've never owned a Mossberg but have heard they produce a solid product .... the fact of the matter is, pumps/single barrels/side by sides/over and unders kick harder than I want to put up with .... today's semiautos are reliable and have far less recoil

I've got a Mossberg 590A1 with the Magpul stock and forearm and I really like it - big, heavy, black shotgun. Doesn't seem to kick as hard as most other shotguns because of the weight and good recoil pad. I figure if it's good enough for the Marines it's good enough for me...

Hey,Joe,

First, I agree with Tractortad's comments. I'm pretty certain the Mossberg 590A1, model# 51663 would be the next shotgun I'd get.
http://www.mossberg.com/product/590a1-9-shot-51663/

My son-in-law recently purchased this shotgun, and uses it as part of his duty equipment for his security guard business. A couple of weeks ago I shot it for the first time at his shooting range. Here is the Range Report where I described that first-time shooting experience. http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=3265

OK. Yes, I have very little experience with this Mossberg shotgun. This week I'll be at his range again and for sure will spend more time shooting the 590A1. Right now I own a Benelli 20-gauge Nova field pump shotgun. My first Benelli was the 12-gauge Nova Tactical pump. I shot a lot of 1-oz. slugs through that 12-ga cylinder bore pump (close to 700 slugs in during two summers), and used it for deer hunting in the fall. But for my next 12-ga shotgun purchase, I wouldn't hesitate getting the 590A1. Here's why.

With the heavy-walled barrel, it has an excellent balance to it. Tactortad is also right that the weight minimizes felt recoil. And of course being parkerized, you've all but eliminated any rust issues down-the-road. What I liked the most is that this model has a ghost-ring sight on it. That's exactly what I had on my Benelli 12-ga, and I shoot very well with that type of sight. I don't know what you'll use your shotgun for, but my main focus would be shooting slugs as my prep for deer hunting. The cylinder bore is perfect for how/what I want to shoot. Finally, I love handling a pump shotgun....'tis my favorite action.

I actually have a choice to make for my deer hunting long gun this year. It is between my new Henry .357 BBS carbine, or the 590A1 shotgun. My son-in-law says I shoot excellently with 12-ga slugs, and has offered the s/g to me for deer hunting. Kind of a hard choice, but it will be one or the other.

So with little actual experience, I'm already convinced the Mossberg is a good pump shotgun. I look forward to "slugging away" again this coming Friday! ;)

I must confess that I have looked hard at the Mossberg 930 SPX model. It is a semi auto 8 shot 12 gauge model.

Just the opposite for me. I own 15 shotguns and not a single semi-auto. I have to borrow one to conduct an NRA basic shotgun course. I don't like the feel of a new round cycling into the chamber, nor all the maintenance involved with them, nor the way they launch empty hulls out the ejection port at velocities approaching the speed of sound. I'll put up with a bit of recoil to avoid those characteristics. Everybody's different.

The Mossberg 500 is nothing special to look at, but it's durable as heck and has stood the test of time. I don't have significant experience with the other two models.

I have one semi-auto shotgun and it is not a favorite by any means (an Ithaca 51). I prefer a pump shotgun and have both Remington 870's and also a Mossberg 500 field model (wood stock). I always liked my Remington 870's (one 12 ga and one 20 ga). I wanted to get another 20 gauge for shooting clays with the grandkids, but Remington quality on 870's was lacking at the time, so I bought a Mossberg 500. It has proved to be a good solid shotgun. I also have a Remington 887 pump shotgun that I won in a "Friends of NRA raffle." It is a good shooter too.

If you want "traditional" - the Mossberg 500 is pretty much traditional. I am a traditional kind of guy (old man, if you prefer)

don't get me wrong, I've owned pump shotguns since the 60's .... I trained on an 870 for 30+ years with NC's Dept of Correction and to stand up to all they were subjected to, they are very solid shotguns .... felt recoil has become critical to me because when we go trap shooting, we normally fire 100 and most of the time 200 rounds .... I've been on blood thinning meds for years and don't see that changing .... with our 70's vintage Remington 11-87 I can literally shoot all day without bruising .... I can and have recently fired a box of 5 3" 00-buck out of the 11-87 without bruising .... that simply isn't true with our Ruger Red Label O/U, Winchester Pump, Remington Pumps, or Browning double barrel .... I don't find that cleaning/maintenance on our 11-87 is much more involved than the pumps .... OK our 1100 and 11-87 do have an O-ring that I change once every 5 - 10 years

My younger son had no firearm in his house for defense of my grandchildren so I bought him a Mossberg 500 pump a few years ago. They are solid, reliable and smooth. Hard to beat for the price. He shoots it regularly and keeps it clean and put away safe.. ;)
I just bought myself one a little fancier, a 590A1 with the 4 shells in the stock and trick slide and ghost ring sight.
I haven't taken delivery yet, but it is one mean looking son of a gun.
The 590A1 has the heavy barrel and metal trigger guard, other than that it's just another Mossberg.
Smooth and reliable. Just what I need for those things that go Bump in the Night.

Bought my 1st Mossberg 590. Price was right.
I found it as easy to shoot and service.
So far it is equal to the Remington 870 which is normally the shotgun I use.
