Mossberg 500 410 Pump

Post by BrokenolMarine » Sat Aug 12, 2023 1:33 pm

I had to drive down to the Gunsmith in Davis, OK to have a rear sight installed on the used 1911 I picked up a couple weeks ago. While killing time while the 'smith did his work, I was browsing his racks of new and used rifles and shotguns, not really expecting to find anything. But... he had good prices on the used guns. Miss T's birthday is this month and there, on the used gun carousel was a Mossberg 410 pump. 24" barrel, Vent Rib, two gold beads... Good Wood, not all beat up. One small area of minor surface rust... and the price was pretty good. Miss T loves the 410s. She has a Mossberg 410 Defender, but it's not really a hunting gun....

Once the 'smith was done, I asked him about the 410, which he had taken in trade. He said it was a nice little gun, would make a nice deer gun. I asked what his bottom price would be, out the door. He asked if I was tax exempt. (Oklahoma/100% Military) Yup. He knocked off $50 and we shook on 'er. Miss T was in her shop when I got home so the pump is in my vault / loading room. Can't wait for her to see it. She hunted with her mom's 410 when she was a kid and loved it. Pictures after her BD.

I was a big fan of the Ithaca 37 to start in the old days and then followed the Remington 870. Both great pumps. A hunting friend of my brother's, though, showed up at the farm with a Mossberg 500 to do some pheasant hunting. Oh, I still liked the 870 more, but I was impressed with the 500 and liked the tang safety. Handled very nice and the action was very slick and smooth. I think a 410 Mossy would be great for hunting. Congrats.

We now have a 500 riot gun with the short barrel, extended mag and cylinder choke which we keep handy along with some slugs as our bear gun. Like I said, basic pump gun, but tried and true.

Nice score on the Mossy, I have one also. Fine little scatter guns.
Never thought about deer hunting with one though.

A few years ago, a few friends and myself, we shot a round of sporting clays using either 410's or 28 ga. Was a fun time.
I think the best we did was about 50%. The guy that owned the place said that wasn't bad for the sub gauges.
I like the tang safety on them.

Looks like Miss T will be shooting the cake candles out with a sweet 410! Nice find and I think I still have a 410 shooter running up and down I-95 somewhere!

I started looking for 410 slugs. Scarce. $40 a box. $8 a shot.

I'll keep looking, maybe I'll get lucky and find a stash for sale at a yard sale or something and buy them all.

I have PLENTY of 12 gauge slug and buck on hand, so we can target shoot with the 12s. The 410 will be used for work.

I know she will like that .410 Mossberg. I like mine.
I even have a short barrel to make it a "riot" gun, lol.
Congratulations on your wonderful gift for her.

I used to have the New Haven version of the Mossy 410 that my mother in law gave to me. It was a grouse shooting wonder. Foolishly traded it off. Somewhere I have a picture of me with it, my dog and a couple of dead grouse. Took a quick look but didn’t find it. That 24” barrel with full choke was a fast swinger and did its part if I did mine. I shot 3” #6 shells.

I just pulled mine out of the safe, it just has Mossberg and no model number.
Looks like the 500. I've had it for a great number of years so maybe the early models weren't called 500's.
