Re: 10mm
I had a Kimber long slide in 45 auto. Great range gun, but didn't care for that 6" barrel length as something to carry. I think a LS makes a lot of sense for hunting or target work, but not something I would want to carry as a woods gun for self-defense. Personal preference, of course, but I learned, long ago, if it isn't comfy to carry, sooner or later it gets left back in camp or the house.

Thanks for your thoughts NCG! It is going to be carried, but only in the woods. I'm thinking a chest holster of some sort. I decided on a 1911 long slide because I'm guessing it'll be a little easier to carry than a revolver with a 7 1/2" barrel. A 30-30 Magnum Research BFR is something else I was considering. I've already got a 30-30 rifle, and dang, I bet that would be fun to shoot.
And if I decide I don't like carrying it, I'll search for something else. Nothing wrong with another gun

I had an AMT longslide in 45 acp once. I dont think I would have wanted to carry it long term but it was an accurate shooter.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I haven't... Lots of family stuff going on. (My father-in-law just passed away, he was also our next door neighbor and great friend) So, firearm purchases have kind of been put on pause.Pudsky wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2020 5:45 pmDid you ever decide on getting a 10mm? I have been doing some research the last couple weeks, and I think I am going to get a 1911 10mm long slide. I am deciding between three different guns: Kimber stainless target long slide, Remington 1911 R1 Hunter, or a Springfield 1911 TRP Operator. I like the 6" barrel, a tad faster bullet speed, and a tad more accurate because of sight radius. If anyone has an input on these guns, please speak up. Hopefully in the next month or so I am going to purchase.Greyhawk wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 5:34 pmAnyone have a 10mm handgun that they are especially fond of? I am thinking of a 10mm for my 2020 firearm purchase, (I limit myself to one firearm a year) I am leaning toward a Glock, I like that it has a 15 round mag, and that it has a rail for a flashlight. Heading out west next fall and I thought with a good chest rig it would be a good bear deterrent. I have a .454 Ruger Redhawk Alaskan, which I can shoot fairly well, and it would do the job. But, follow up shots in a tight situation are pretty tough with the stout recoil, and I don't really want to duct tape a flashlight to it. Let me know what you all think... Or should I just get a can of bear spray? Might be cheaper, but not as much fun at the range!
I am also torn... 10 MM? or I found a beautiful Marlin Pre-Rem 1894 Cowboy in 45 colt. I cant get both this year so..... choices... choices! The 1911's are awesome for sure... But if I did get a 10mm I would like something with a rail on the bottom for a flashlight, as I would be using it for bear defense for a trip out west this fall. Let us know what you decide on and post a picture for sure! Good luck!

Re: 10mm
Given the extra cost, and likelyhood of me getting into a bad situation, I think I'll stick with my 500 mag. I can certainly survive the recoil by adrenaline alone, should a bad situation arise.
Yes, I have considered a 10 mm, but cannot justify the purchace. Especially because of my love of wheel guns, and the 500 will dispatch anything on the planet with a well placed shot....knock on wood.

Just watched a rerun of “Shooting USA” from the shot show in LV and Les Baer has a custom 10 for a mere $3100.00

I'll take two! Re: 10mm
Don't want to be a nag on the carry-ability issue, but I had a 5" S&W X in 460 with a shoulder rig holster made specifically for that model and barrel length. I carried it once on a 2 mile test hike in the woods and that was enough. Way, way too heavy for me to use as a carry gun. The recoil wasn't that bad - X revolvers have built in compensators - but it was still bad enough to make a quick follow up shot impossible. The worst part was the concussion and noise. Shooting it even once without hearing protection will do permanent damage to your hearing. Remember, this is a revolver and that's the worst handgun design as far as having to take a shot without hearing protection.
I think Smith X revolvers are superb hunting revolvers, but not something I can use as a woods carry gun. Each to their own, as always, though.

Re: 10mm
Actually, could not agree with you more NCG. NOT a carry gun. Just Know I cannot afford a 10 mm any time soon. Kinda a tongue in cheek statement I made. Very true regarding the almost impossible follow up shot. Better make that first one count!
Back when I bear hunted, I did carry it all day in a chest rig and wasn't bad, I was however 18 years younger.
As far as hearing protection goes...better be wearing it right from the git-go!, of course that would also apply, as far as I'm concerned,to a semi as well. Actually, ANY shooting at this point as my hearing has already been compromised.
