Re: CCW..Question
So is an initial background check done even though no permit is required?
We don't have this as yet in Va. I have to renew my CCW permit every 5 yrs. but it is basically another tax.

Re: CCW..Question
If you're asking me, there is no MS State level background check for those who wish to carry sans permit. If you do desire a permit, then there is a State level background check. The difference is ~ $135 dollars for the permit and some lesser amount for renewals. Firearm purchases thru a FFL require the usual Federal NICS check. For private sales/transfers between residents there is no MS State involvement whatsoever, but Federal law does apply if one party is a non-resident.fortyshooter wrote:So is an initial background check done even though no permit is required?

Re: CCW..Question
I don't have anything small enough to carry, but if I did I would need a heck of a lot more training than the minimum course required.

Re: CCW..Question
Unlike Flinch, I carry while showering. That's why I carry Glocks Actually, one of my Glocks is always sitting on a window sill next to the shower.
I almost always carry or have a pistol or rifle within arms reach. Quite often both, even at home. I put a rifle in my truck and carry a pistol whenever I leave home. I do not frequent places where I cannot legally carry.
A group of us were at the outdoor range where I am a member. A young Army Reservist was training his younger nephews on rifles and pistols. He asked them if he could borrow some money for a soda. They both replied that they did not bring their wallets. He said "never leave your bedroom without your wallet". The rest of us replied all at once ".... that, never leave your bedroom without your gun".
I have spent some time in law enforcement locally and at the federal level (AFOSI). In the short period I worked for a local agency, I drew my pistol almost every day and pointed it at someone. Never had to pull the trigger. The closest I came to being in a gun fight was while on vacation and it would have been in my own back yard. I took a week off from work and spent the majority of it hauling mulch from the driveway to the back yard. The only time I was not in the back yard was for a couple of hours when my wife and I went to the range. While we were gone, three armed car jackers went thru our back yard while fleeing from the police. They were trying to find an open house to hide. They had been chased for about 50 miles before they dumped the car and jumped several fences including ours. I would have been in the back yard with two back doors open if we had not gone to the range. However, I would have also been armed. Isn't it ironic that I went to the range to go shooting and therefore avoided a gun fight.
If any of you follow Dr. Gary K. Roberts (a terminal ballistics expert) you may have read some of his stories either his own or recounting someone's story he knows that has been in a gun fight in their own home or their neighborhood. Dr. Roberts says he lives in one of the safest neighborhoods in the US and he still had to draw his pistol while walking his shepherd one evening. I forgot how many men, five or more if I remember correctly, intended to do him harm. They backed off when he drew and his shepherd demonstrated how aggressive he could be.
Can't always predict accurately that since your in a safe neighborhood or isolated area, that there won't be a threat. As I get older and slower, it becomes more important that I have one or more of my guns on me or at my side.
