Can we start a handgun and long gun picture threads?
Re: Can we start a handgun and long gun picture threads?
So, here is the old Mossberg Model 25. Found it in my one-time grandfather-in-law's very damp, under the house (below ground) garage in Ohio, sitting in a corner. The butt plate and trigger guard were rusty, the butt plate rather bad, the butt end three inches or so of stock were just about black with water damage. Why the butt plate did not just rust away to nothing I'll never know. It sat high and dry in my garage for about five or so years, I shed myself of that wench (being nice here) and it got packed up with my stuff and stored in my next garage for a few years. One day my wife (my real honey) saw it peeking out from a shelf at the 7 foot level and asked about it - I had totally forgotten I even had it. I figured, clean the bore and bolt and see if it shoots, if so, I'll do something with it. So first time out, I could not get on a target to save my butt unless I aimed 7 inches right. I whacked the rear sight, no change. I got disgusted and back on the shelf in the garage it went. About 6 or 8 years later, I came across it again, this time two states and moves later, figured, one more try. Took it out and surprise surprise - POI was POA at 25 yards!! I became a horses ass that day, happily!
I stripped the snot out of the finish, what was left, it was horrible. I sanded the butt plate and trigger guard and was pleasantly pleased with how smooth the metal came out, so painted them in gloss high temp something or other I had left over from painting motorcycle exhaust parts. They came out nice! I bleached, and bleached the wood until I was pretty sure I could cure the water in the municipal swimming pool by just stirring it with the bleached stock, then applied more than a few coats of Tung oil, sanding as I went.
I left the metal alone, it's a nice brown, there are some small areas of rust I will attend to one day, but they are not spreading, so I have time...
Those crappy "sheet metal" sights? Somebody knew what they were doing - the blade up front is very thin, and the rear notch is just about as thin - they are perfectly suited to the small rifle this is and at 25 yards being spot on, I am sure at 35 - 50, they are just as useful, and I don't shoot 22LR iron sighted much further than 35 yards anyway, eyes are not what they used to be!

Really, nice ones brm. Thanks for sharing.
I especially like those grips on the 1911.
I'm looking for some to add to mine.

BRM, no boredom here, just admiration. Those are some good looking firearms presented very well with the color combinations between the long and short guns.
Vaquero, between your gun pics and your morning coffee pics seeing your posts is always a treat. Nice presentation.
I feel like I’m hanging out with a bunch of artists! You guys are awesome.
