The Gun Digest Book of S&W. Nice background about the revolver frames. Takes a few minutes for it to download though.

Any update on what the "V" stamped on the cylinder means?

Nothing specific - some say it designates SS (which doesn't make sense) another said it was a stamp of approval after returning to the factory for a recall - again who knows.

.
Some additional web sloothing this evening...

https://revolverguy.com/missing-link-sm ... -model-68/
Missing Link: The Smith & Wesson Model 68 ... The unique feature of the Model 68 barrel is that the extension was longer, where it poked through the rear of the frame, so that it could be mated with a .38 Special-only cylinder (stamped with a “V” on the face, to denote the .38 Special chambering).
Also a Google search (dead end) remanent... anyone have a 4th ed. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson?

Jim Supica, ‎Richard Nahas - 2016 - ‎Smith and Wesson firearms
Model. 68: .38. Special. California. Highway. Patrol. Caliber – .38 S&W Special, double-action revolver built on the ... with a “V” to indicate a .38 Special cylinder.

Interesting story on the mod 68 but both my mod 66 and mod 60 have the 'V' on the cylinders also.

definitely would not make sense for the 66. As for the 60 is it a .38 or .357?

Good so far. Now back to the 66. The first few web finds last night talking about the 66 must have been older. They said the 66 was .357 magnum only. Newer material found a minute ago indicates the 66 is also available in .38 special +P. So is your 66 an .357 or a .38?
