As I understand it, there were two reasons the FBI dropped the .40. The other reason was reliability issues with the .40. A lot of .40s are built on 9mm frames and can't stand up to the pounding they get in the larger caliber.

Hey, let's not forget the 10mm, the one that started it all for the .40. Glad to see the 10mm coming back into popularity. Have shot it in a 1911 and a Sig and it really is an outstanding round.

The Glock in 45 acp or 10mm is a super guns , but in a DA double stack the trigger is too far forward for my hands . Glock in the small frame double stack fits my hand perfect and Glock was the only double stack in any gun at that time to fit my hand . After the problem I had in Az with more bad guys then ammo . I switched from 1911 to Glock in 40 SW double stack . The 1911 with short trigger fits me perfect but 8 round is not ammo in my gun for me .. When the bad guy are only 3 steps away from you , you will never get a chance to reload your gun again . That is why I will never carry a revolver unless I use it as a BUG gun only . I got lucky in PA with a model 60 SW one shot and they all turned and ran .

Well, it'll be February soon, and I haven't bought any more 1911's. Still, there's a lot of 2018 left yet.

I have 'dabbled' with 1911s over the years but currently only own one - a 1991-A1 I bought new in 2003 and is the most reliable and accurate of all I have owned. I attribute my somewhat early, bad experiences were due to me being 'bent' on owning only Colt and some of them have been older with some of the not too untypical problems they suffered from. One of the worst was an early 70's Gold Cup I bought that appeared unfired. Beautiful fit and finish but a terrible shooter! FTEs, jamming and a myriad of other issues caused me to sell it off. My 1991 is the 'plain Jane' early parkerized model, nothing to look at but it is capable of 1.5" groups at 25 yards with good reloads and benchrested. Even new shooters routinely shoot ragged groups with it and are impressed with its accuracy. Most of my early experiences were due to inexperience but my gun interests drifted into other areas so for me the 1911 is just one of the guns I own but shoot regularly. For me it's a lot about tradition and the quality of an all steel gun. The 1911 however is still the benchmark by which nearly all SA pistols are 'gauged' and even though a single stack style I believe it to still be a formidable gun for defense considering the ease of control and accuracy modern ones display. If shot placement is the key then a good 1911 in the right hand will deliver.

I have more 1911's, Ruger, Springfield, Colt. Mostly 45acp but a couple of 9mm. If I going to a gun store I am going to head to the 45 acp case and look and handle a couple 1911's .
