CZ 452 'Farewell Edition'

Post by roddy » Mon Mar 16, 2020 3:19 pm

I passed on a used one last year, and have been looking for another ever since. The wood on this one is pretty plain compared to the one I looked at last year, but this one is new. I Got the chance to take a few pics today...will get a scope on it soon, and see how it works.

Thanks.
Don't get me wrong...it is a nice stick of wood, and I really like the color. The one I looked at last year had an abundance of figure, and the grain was not as straight. Check out some of Bandit's 'Grand Finale' pictures, and you'll see what I mean. This is the Canadian/Australian 'equivalent' to the Grand Finale.

roddy,
I do like the wood color and that type of grain usually makes a strong and stable stock. Out of all mine and my wife's GF rifles the two most plain stocked ones seem to be the best shooters overall. I really have to say that we have been lucky with how well ours shoot for light sporter rifles. I would hate to have to part with any of ours and like them as well as any rifle I have owned. I am sure you are going to be one happy guy after shooting yours. It is our nature as gun people to want to win the wood lottery but it is not always in the cards to come out with a real winner. Congratulations on your new CZ.

Thanks bandit.
I'm really not that concerned about the wood...just happy to have found someone that still had a new one in the warehouse. That's worth more to me than a used one with lottery-level wood. I mounted some glass today (Burris Timberline 4.5-14 X 32 with adjustable objective), and I'm looking forward to sighting it in. It looks to be a wet spring, so it may be a while before I can get out beyond 30 yards or so. Beyond that, I'm ankle deep in mud at the moment.
I'm curious about the differences between the Grand Finale and the Farewell Edition. I've never seen a GF in person, and I don't believe they were imported here. At a glance, the stock checkering, and the 'flame bluing' on assorted bits jumps out at me, but that's it. Here are a few more pictures...can you spot anything else?

roddy,
There is a few differences between the two models other than the ones you mentioned. The checkering is different in the GF has a full wrap checkering around the fore end. Has the diamonds in the pattern rather than the leaf style of the Farewell Edition. Nothing on the grip cap except the CZ emblem.
Full wrap around checkering.

Ebony cap with the CZ emblem.

I have only seen a few pictures of the Canadian model and they were none with any figured wood like some GF models. But I would have to believe there is plenty of super nice examples of really nice stocks out there. I see nothing wrong with yours. I like it very much and would like to add one with mine just like yours. You will be getting a PM from me possibly tomorrow about a few possible accuracy improvements.

The engraving I believe is also different on the GF than the Farewell Edition. It is also different from one GF to another between the ones we have.
Out of five of ours here and two that my friend has and one of my SIl's all the engraving is slightly different to a lot different. Some argue the engraving is roll engraved but CZ advertises it as hand engraved. If it is roll engraved wouldn't it all look the same? Here is two side by side for a comparison of GF engraving. The top rifle has quite a bit more coverage than the bottom rifle. Enough difference to look like it would be a more expensive model.

I like the wrapped checkering...the figure running through it looks really good.

The engraving is quite different, which would support the 'hand engraved' claim. To my eye (at least on mine), it looks pretty consistent in depth to be hand done, but doesn't really look 'rolled in' either. If I had to guess, maybe done by a machine with several different programmed patterns, then dressed-up by hand? Just a guess...

Where yours has Grand Finale, mine has the standard 2E ZKM American, and the 520/1000 is where yours has the CZ USA info. Is the GF numbered as well? No grip cap on mine, just the 60th anniversary wreath cut into the walnut. As far as I can tell, all Farewell models were built in 2016. I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of the Farewell with '60 years - 1956-2016', where ours have the 'one of one thousand' engraving, and it looked to be rolled in. Were the GFs 2016 as well?

The GF is numbered a little different. They are numbered 4520500 or whatever number the gun is. I used the 500 number just as an example. I would imagine some where there is the 4521000. As far as engraving my consecutive numbered rifles are different engraving between the two. Our GF models started in '17 but there is still a few left out there. I saw a place last week that had them for low $800 range. I honestly feel they are worth every dime of their price. The folks who say they aren't worth the price never had one in their hands or they would probably change their minds.
Roddy, If your has oil finish which I believe it does don't get rain on it as it will spot just like any other oil finished stock.
