Randy's 35 Remington talk plus an itch I have brings me to this question.
Same rifle two different .35 caliber cartriges.
If I have a 35rem do I practically (what ever that is) need a 357?
Does a 35rem do evrything a 357 can but better?

Yes.

Of course they don't make a revolver in 35 Rem.
I have both.
The first deer that I ever killed with one of my handloads was with a 357 Rossi M92.
About 90 yds. away, it didn't go more than 5-10 yds.

You can share bullets if you reload, 158 gr cast with some unique in a 35 is cool as all get out.

The 35 Rem was Remington's answer to Winchester's 30-30. They are peers, near equal and the debate still continues about which is better. It would be rather difficult to get about 2200 foot pounds of muzzle energy from a 357 Mag.

The 357 Maximum (a lengthened 357 mag), which almost went extinct (but didn't, largely due to Contender shooters), would get you closer, but at this point, it's strictly a hand loader's cartridge.

I thinking about thinning out the accumulation of rifles?
Wanting to cover my Silhouette sport shooting and any hunting opportunities that may come my way.
Though I buy a license and tags every year can't say I do much if any hunting. More opportunity than anything else.
Just got a rifle for PC Silhouette 25-20, that has just enchanted me tremendously witch leads me to wonder if I need a 357.
Is the 357 filling a niche I'm not covering?
That my wondering anyway.

As others have mentioned need is subjective - but as a 'want' the plot thickens.

All shooters and gun owners vary in their preferences and a lot of this has to do with one's shooting interests and environment.

I tend to enjoy lever action rifles as a hobby as well as shooting and I own five - with three in .30-30.

I have owned two in .357 (currently just a BBB) but I can honestly say getting a .357 rifle for me was a want but based on practicality and my shooting interests.

The practical part is I reload and have always loaded .357 so I was not starting with a new caliber. In a rifle the .357 is typically low recoil so this allows me to shoot it as much as I want comfortably. I also have a .357 revolver so the caliber is double-duty for me - as it is for many as well

It also gives me a very good round for informal or impromptu varmint hunting in my area.

In short the .357 fills both my interest and practical needs and wants. Cheap to load, easy on the shoulder and effective in my environment.

In conclusion I have known and read about many who have bought a rifle they WANTED, had no need for it in their shooting environment and became dissatisfied and sold them. As a rule these were typically larger calibers that were expensive and uncomfortable to shoot.

357 is Very inexpensive centerfire plinking cartridge.
The cases are so inexpensive if I miss a few on the ground I don't worry about it.
With a 45-70 or 25-20 or evev 35rem cases talk about the tyranny of reloading.
That is a big point that I've over looked.

Couple of the points sum up why I went .30-30. Also what was available at the LGS at the time in shiny brass.
