We have two new 1895 Marlins(2017,2018) and an older 1894 Marlin (2006). We like them all. The new 1894 Marlins are much better than they were a couple of years ago, but imo, they are still not as good as the JM branded ones built in CT prior to 2009-2010. The 1894 design is not as easy to build as the 1895 and I think it has been giving Marlin/Remington a hard time trying to get it right in their new plant in New York. The initial 1894's that came out after Marlin's move to NY were infamous for poor quality. But - $450 for a new 1894 44Mag is an excellent price (they go for just under $600 at Bud's). If you can check it out to make sure it cycles ok and the sights are indexed correctly, it is probably a good buy.

Don't forget to also look in the bore closely. There has been many threads on other forums about how bad the rifling in the barrels have been. I know one thing if there is any issues and it must go back to Remington there customer service is non existent.

I have been thinking about buying Marlin in the 357 flavor. But, I noticed that the stock screw on my 2016 336W has chipped again. Mind you, I only removed it to oil the trigger assembly as the manual directs. The screw seems like some type of alloyed. So now, I thinking about a Henry in the 357 flavor.

we've been delighted with our Henry BBS 357 .... it's well built, performs as designed, and is fun to fire .... their new Big Boy Color Case Hardened line is exceptional ===> https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/big-boy ... -hardened/

I had been looking for a JM .357 to replace the Winchester Trapper I was going to sell.
Not finding one I discovered my BBB in a local rural supply store and decided I'd better take it before it disappeared.
I only had minimal experience with Henry but after nearly an hour of scrutinizing it, running a patch down the barrel, lots of hefting and sighting it I took it and have been satisfied 99%!
Recently I looked at a new Marlin - it was some fancy model with engraving and a gold animal relief on the receiver - and quite frankly I was moderately impressed! Smooth tight action, good wood to metal fit and good Bore.
If it had been a .357 I may have been tempted but it was a .45 Colt so I handed it back.

Well I picked up my 1894 today. It looks better than the one I bought new 20 yrs ago. The metal to wood for is perfect, the wood is nice , the lever works smooth. The only thing is that the trigger is 7 lbs. Have to fix that.
