Got myself another Marlin 336.

Post by MICoyote » Wed Aug 15, 2018 2:22 pm

I just couldn't pass this one up!

Excellent condition Marlin 336 30-30 with a 20" barrel microgroove barrel. The barrel is JM stamped. Serial number shows it to be a 1972.

It came with the following:

Wild Wild West Trigger
Wild Wild West follower
XS Sights and scout rail
Uncle Mikes Hammer extension.
Every part on the bolt has been replaced expect the firing pin.
The rifle is professionally Ceracoated Black.
And a bag of spare parts

Guy was going to use it for hog hunting, but changed his mind.

Best part? Only $550!

He just wanted the money back for the upgrades he did. So, I basically got the rifle it for free. :D

Yes, I was going to get a Winchester but couldn't pass this up.

Of course, there is a Winchester in 30-30 at my LGS that is in LN condition for $625.

Coyote,

Time for me to learn something. Not only in your post, but in a couple of others I've seen the expression re. Marlins, "The barrel is JM stamped." Yup, don't know what that means. Can you 'splain it, please?

Oh yes, really nice-looking 1972 .30-30 you got there.....looks like beautiful wood for its age, too.

Thanks...PT7

JM is the trade mark of the Marlin company, I believe it is the initials of the founder Jame Marlin.

More info:

Marlins with mark are usually a better made rifle then the later models including the Remlins.

JM stands for John Marlin. Guns stamped with a JM on the barrel were made by the original Marlin company, owned by the Marlin family in New Haven, CT, then later in North Haven, Ct. A JM Marlin, then, is a Marlin made Marlin, not a Remington made Marlin from the Remington factory in Ilion N.Y., made after Remington bought the company and closed down the North Haven factory.

Thanks for all the info/explanation. I've not followed Marlins at all, nor ever had one. Seems like each company has its own unique history, be it good, bad, or ugly.

The other thing I learned (figured out) between your two posts is what "Remlins" are. Interesting term, but almost like a private joke to an "uneducated" fellow such as I.
