.222 Remington

Post by Shakey Jake » Mon Apr 02, 2018 3:30 pm

As per another thread that got me interested in the Henry .223, I then realized that I sort of miss my old Ruger M77 (several on Gunbroker). So, I've been lurking around. I haven't ruled out the H015223 yet but came across a Westernfield 712 (Savage 840 clone) in .222 Remington and wondered how that might fare. Doesn't look like a bad rifle but don't know when these were made. I know some of the older Savage rifles were really darned accurate. I know ammo for the .223 would be a lot cheaper. I'd have to get dies and load the .222. Anyone have any information they'd like to share feel free.

Does it have a scope mount. If not an 822 Hornet mount works.
I had a Coast To Coast 840 3DS in 30-30 for awhile.
Still have the original stock and mount.

I use to have one and its a great round for accuracy and fun to play with. Don't have one anymore. I see CZ chambers it in the American and the LUX. I think if I was to buy one it would be one of theres although Savage would also be a consideration. I just don't need anymore calibers I have to many as it is. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

The 222 Remington is probably the best center fire cartridge going for ease of reloading, super brass life and outstanding accuracy. In this part of Pa. where I live the 222 will handle 95% of the varmint shooting opportunities this area offers. Still cheap enough to shoot by reloading to just punch paper and other targets and not break you up doing it. The rifle companies are neglecting a fine cartridge. I really like my Sako Hunter and the Tikka Forest I have right now. It is hard to make a 222 shoot bad unless the barrel is just not any good.

The .222-50grain bullets and IMR4198 make a wonderful "Old School" varmint combination. My earliest memories of hunting center around my Dad and his Savage .222. I would carry the binoculars and Dad carried the rifle on our groundhog hunts on a small farm I grew up on. I'd spot them for him to shoot. It was handed down to me years ago. Would love to see all the groundhogs in one pile that rifle has accounted for!

I was wondering if this Savage was worth the money.....basically that was the question. Fajen stock, scope mount, no bids with starting bid at $380.

Seems a trifle high to me. But a Fajen is a high dollar stock. Were it me I'd look for a period correct/factory original model.

Just spoke with a friend in Tucson who knows a LOT about firearms. He used to make custom rifles. He told me to pass so I'll take his advice.

Ordered a .223 Ruger American All Weather this morning. I was thinking of the Henry but got to thinking about my issues with my .327 BBS and decided to go with the Ruger. I've always have good luck with Ruger rifles. My M77 MKII in .270 was great (sold it) and nothing can beat my No. 1 in 25-06.
