Best Winchester 92

Post by Twotone » Sat Dec 09, 2017 11:59 am

Hi
Thinking in the new year to add a 92 to my fledgling collection and wondered what everyones opinions were on best rifle to buy, calibre etc
Not sure whether to go for a Miroku Winchester, or one of the Italian clones. A little undecided about calibre too. i have a 94 in 30-30, a Henry in .357, I was not sure whether to have another .357 or go for the only other option which seems to be .45 LC. Not sure if the .45 offers me anything to shout about compared to the .357.
All opinions welcome, its not a gun for hunting, just plinking fun on the range out to 100 yds max.

I have a Taurus and like it. Out of the box it is a bit stiff and not well finished. Especially the furniture. But a few hours of polishing parts, cutting springs and working on the wood and it is top notch.

The Miroku won't need any tuning or finish work, out of the box. It's the quality option, but it is expensive and it will have the tang safety which is a turn off for some. Doesn't bother me a bit, because it is otherwise such a fine gun. Had one in 357, but in a moment of stupidity, let some one talk me out of it. Been looking to correct that mistake.

Might also look at the Taylor 1892, made in Italy. Not cheap, either, but it does give you're cartridge options.

45 Colt is a great option, but unless you reload, it is expensive to shoot and factory ammo is sometimes hard to find, locally. For plinking and fun work, it would be hard to beat another 357. 38s in a '92 would be a breeze.

My Taurus is a 357/38 and think it is a good caliber for it.

We have a Miroku 1892 in 45LC. Like NCG said, it didn't need any tuning or finish work - just a good cleaning. We got it because I think the John Browning designed action on an 1892 is just fascinating to operate. It's a very well made rifle, but one I would never take into the woods - just too pretty to beat up... The action is super-smooth and feels different than the Bigboys and Marlins. The only downside on this rifle is the trigger - it has a rebounding hammer and the pull is a bit stiff. I would think the trigger on a Rossi made 1892 would be easier to lighten up...Overall, it's a very nice rifle - heirloom quality that can passed down to future generations.

Thanks everyone, i am leaning twoards the miroku, just had a look at one in a store and it was really nice, never shot a .45 so did wonder about that, already have .357, 30-30, so something sifferent would be nice. I load my own so that would reduce costs a little bit. The .45’s are due in to the store after Christmas . Again thanks to you all and a safe and happy Christmas from Snowdonia

Twotone, if you reload, the 45 Colt is an outstanding choice. Great cartridge in a lever gun. You can load the 45 Colt from mild to truly wild, well beyond what a 357 can do. My experience with Marlins in the 45 Colt has been very positive. If I hadn't gotten out of reloading, I'd still be shooting the Marlin.

Tractor, that is one beautiful '92. Wow!

45 Colt will put a smile on your face. Big 'ok cowboy lead sends splinters out the backboard at the range. They've never replaced so much plywood since I joined the club.
Look at the Cimarron website too. The Ubertis are shooters.

Agree with RR and NCG on 45LC - they are a blast to send downrange - really fun to hear them smack jugs and steel plates - you can shoot the standard Cowboy loads all day (if you can afford it)...
