Savage Arms Model 42 (fun)

This is a little fun gun that I got about a year or so ago. It's .22 lr rifle over .410 shotgun barrel.

It has one hammer. There is a pivot piece on the nose of the hammer. Flip it up to fire the .22 and push the nose down to fire the shotgun.

I really like the old wood and blue steel Savages, but never see them. I got a good deal on this one new, so I got it.

I haven't done much with it except test fire it. The lever in front of the trigger guard breaks it open.

Dave, Thanks for the photos. I have wondered about those. Is the 410 a full choke?

A very nice looking gun, Daytime Dave. If you were to shoot it more, it would be neat to hear your thots on it. BTW, how would you "name" such a configuration when it is a breakaway o/u in two calibers? Maybe they chose the first numeric digit from each caliber to call it a "42."

I agree, JEBAR -- it is some kind of rig. I've seen the Savage before. But the one I found made by Chiappa Firearms really was a surprise to me. I think Chiappa has the rep of going more for "extremes" in firearms configuration. I know their revolvers are most unusual after reading about the Rhino model.

But back to this rifle/shotgun config. Take a peek at this Chiappa X-Caliber http://chiappafirearms.com/product/2696
Almost hard to believe the write up. They say the original config was "a rifled .22 LR and a smooth bore .12 GA -; this rifle can fire up to 12 different calibers thanks to the 8 steel adapters supplied." I'd say there would be a challenge keeping that variety of ammo in stock! But it would be fun to see one of these --- actually, double fun would be to try one out!

in years past I hunted with a fellow who carried a Drilling "Combination Gun" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combination_gun .... his was a 12 ga side-by-side double barrel on top with a 30-30 tucked in below .... don't ever recall him taking a bear with it; nonetheless, I thought it was a great idea

Sir Henry, it does come in .22 mag over .410 also.
Travlin, I don't know. I store it elsewhere and still have yet to get to it.

I like the older combo guns with wood and steel better. I keep looking for one.
