Let's talk 22-250
I'm thinking about adding another rifle to the collection. Mainly for target shooting at the range. I've been reading up on this caliber and other than barrel life it seems like it could be a nice addition. Chime in if you have one or know of something else that may be better suited. My current rifles are: Browning T-Bolt .22 LR, H&R Plainsman 22 LR, Marlin 783 .22 WMR, M77 .22 Hornet, BLR .243, Ruger American .223, Ruger No. 1 25-06, Rem 700 .270, M77 HB .280, and Rem 788 .308. What do you think or recommend?
I'm not including my lever action rifles in this list.

So Im guessing from your line up maybe you are after a hot rod 22 caliber maybe. Ive owned both in a Ruger 77 varmint barrel 22-250 and a 220 swift. My swift would out shoot the 22-250. I in fact liked it better. I wouldnt worry too much about barrel burnout neither of us would live long enough to burn one out. Just my .02 cents worth

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Jake, I had a 22-250 a few years ago. A Savage 112 FVS single shot bolt action with 26" heavy barrel. That rifle was extremely accurate. Load was either 35.0gr IMR 4064 or 36.0gr Varget; both with a Sierra 55gr bthp bullet. 200 yards, 10 shots could be covered with a quarter. Should never have sold that rifle. Think you would like it. I have not shot a 220 Swift to compare. Hear they are pretty good tho.

Had a few swifts over the years and they have all been tack drivers, if you are after velocity and accuracy the 204 is well worth a look, very similar ballistics to the big 22cals. If you just want something a bit different to normal then have a look around for a 222 not far behind the 223 ballistics wise but again a reputation for being a tack driver. It dominated benchrest competition until the PPC's came along.

22-250 has a proven history .... I don't know that I'll ever own one but in researching small caliber centerfires I'm drawn to the Ruger 204 ....

That does seem like a very good round Jim. If I ever venture back into the smaller caliber arena again, I'll most likely look for another 22-250, as I have dies, a good number of cases and some bullets left. And the powder for it. Hmm. Possibly a light walking desert shooter. A different proposition than what I currently have been doing. Hmm!

having the dies and other stuff needed to reload already on hand is a major plus .... I don't know of a lever action that is chambered for 204 so I have no clue what brand of rifle I'd look for ....having to start from scratch, a 223 wouldn't be bad .... components are certainly readily available

Re: Let's talk 22-250
I already have a .223 in the Ruger American All Weather (stainless barrel). It's a very accurate rifle and I enjoy shooting it. I'm thinking about getting a Savage 110 Varmint Synthetic or there's a used Savage 112 BVSS-S at a local gun store. The owner won't sell to me because he has it on Gunbroker and it has a bid on it so I'd have to go that route. At least I could save on shipping and FFL fees by picking it up at his store. We'll see. I've just been enjoying the smaller calibers lately.JEBar wrote: ↑Sat Nov 20, 2021 9:17 pmhaving the dies and other stuff needed to reload already on hand is a major plus .... Re: Let's talk 22-250
I bought a Model 70 Winchester in 22-250 back in the mid 70s. I shot a bunch of coyotes with it. My son shot his first 4 deer and has claimed the gun for when I am no longer here. I am going to gift him the rifle and all that I used to load for. I had loaded 60gr Nosler partitions for him to deer hunt. They worked like a charm. The coyote load used the 52gr Speers. I liked the the cartridge but not so much the M 70.

Re: Let's talk 22-250
Okay, the good news is I won the bid for the Savage and didn't have to go but $5 over the initial offering. I drove to the gun store and picked up this afternoon after winning the bid. The rifle looks to be in great shape and has a Tasco fixed 35X scope on it. It looks to me to be off center so I'll take it have bore sighted and set right. The bad news is someone shot my passenger side window on the way back with either a BB or pellet gun. The dispatcher said I was the third one today at that location. So my with my $500 deductible the rifle got a lot more expensive.
