It is not about if you have to ask how much you cant afford one it is about If one does not ask how much, most likely he or she will get screwed!

People have different outlooks on money and on cost & value generally. The very wealthy often view money as merely a way to keep score in the big game against their peers and competitors. Paying exorbitant amounts for something that isn't worth much is a form of competition and ego boosting; for example: "I can waste more money than you can". Likewise, throwing tons of cash at speculative investments, or obsure & dubious charities and "foundations" also feeds the ego ( and is usually a tax deduction). Sounds silly, I know, but that's often how the game is played.

Re: People are losing it
a long time ago I decided to purchase a powerful zoom lens for my wife's Minolta 35 MM camera for Christmas .... I knew nothing about such things .... I went to a store and asked the fellow for the best zoom lens for her camera and made what turned out to be a huge mistake at not asking the price .... lets just say that when I got to checkout I had a very rude awakening .... put it on a charge card and have never made that mistake again ..
