Ruger AR 556 in 300 Blackout

Post by Hatchdog » Fri Feb 10, 2023 10:40 am

I picked up my Ruger AR in 300 Blackout after the mandatory waiting period for a background check. My scope arrived too so I got it mounted yesterday. The Ruger is the Optics Ready model with the free floating handguard which is what I prefer. I have all my loading components so will be putting together some test loads and heading to the range probably next week. First experience with this caliber so it will be fun to figure it out. I will probably just stay with supersonic velocities although this caliber is designed for subsonic. Just another tool in the tool box.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I ran into an interesting conundrum with the scope mounting. I had on hand some high 30 mm rings so I didn’t get an AR specific mount. Notice the scope in the standard rifle rings is much further back than the scope in the cantilever AR mount. These two scopes are within .5 inch of eye relief. I moved the scope in the rings forward so it was mounted the same as the AR mount and lost all eye relief. Yet the scope in the AR mount works fine…crazy

Here are the two examples and notice the rear of the scope in relation to the charge handle. Also here’s a pic of a .223 and a 300 Blackout. That BO cartridge looks mean.

I changed my rings to an AR mount and was able to move the scope further forward. This has been an interesting discovery. The AR mount is .25 - .50 inch higher than the rifle rings and this possible it contributing to the difference??????? Anyway, I’m liking this setup better.
