Proper terminology?
Re: Proper terminology?
I avoid using the words 'gun', 'weapon', 'AR'. Outside the fold, so to speak, these words seem more likely to stir up peoples ire. Less so using the words 'firearm', 'rifle', 'revolver'. Can't explain it, just seems that way.
In general I try to use the word 'firearm'.
For specific types, using words like 'lever action', 'revolver', 'semiautomatic', etc
For ammunition, 'ammo', 'cartridge', 'round', 'case(no bullet), 'bullet(no case).

I think that "clip" was probably used in a lot of "TV/Film" of the 50s/60s/70s and we just kind of say it, which bothers a lot of people

Well, I don't know what is considered proper, but I vote carbeen!roddy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 7:38 amEven the right word with the wrong pronunciation can get some people's feathers ruffled. Example? Carbine. Is it carbeen, or carbien? It seems to be regional...some say it one way, some say it the other. Either way, you'll likely get a cringe or a stern look if you say it differently than the listener is used to.

Re: Proper terminology?
When speaking with the general public, I don't cringe visibly when they misuse the terms, but if we are having a real discussion I am NOT shy about asking them to "be clear" about which type of firearm they are talking about. "A gun can range from a tiny pocket .22, which is a misuse of the phrase by the way, all the way up to the 155 Howitzer Field Artillary Piece. That big gun would be a correct use of the term."
This is where you get the and hear the exasperated sigh.
If I know I am talking with a gun person, I make it a point to use the correct terminology, but unless they ask, don't offer to correct any mistakes they might make. Not the way to win new shooting buddies.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...

Re: Proper terminology?
I try to make a conscious effort to avoid the term 'gun'. I will say firearm, rifle, revolver, or pistol. Although I do use the terms shotgun or handgun, which contain 'gun' but are more descriptive. People look at me funny when they ask if I like 'guns' and I ask 'Which kind?" LOL
