Henry Single Shot Trigger Job H015

Post by Bear-of-Grayling » Thu Sep 12, 2019 6:34 pm

I am new to this forum. Howdy everyone. I just picked up a couple H015 single shots. 223 and 308. I tried to find some tried and tested trigger tunes but to no avail. The 308 was barely acceptable at almost 6lbs but the 223 trigger weighed in at a whopping 9-10 lbs! The “replace spring” idea floating around out there did not work on either one of mine. The hammer strike was slower and too weak to set off many different brands of factory ammo. If anyone wants the Grainger springs to replace the large factory spring, I have a bag full. I disassembled the rifle down to the hammer and trigger. Very simple task. About 5 minutes or less. Then polished both parts with 500 grit sandpaper and polished with a buffing wheel. I will post pics of before and after on the parts. The trigger pull now “with the factory springs” is 4lbs 8oz for the 308 and 5lbs 5oz for the 223. No creep. Fast lock time. Good hard strike. I could hear the springs bind when cocking the hammer so I greased them up real good and now I cocks smooth and quiet. I also posted pics of the jigs I made to keep the flats flat and the edges sharp. I always buff the surfaces in the jig as well. As you can see the factory edges are not ground at all and very crude. Being new to this forum, I realized after creating this post that I put it under the wrong category. I posted it since under the “Single Shot”. I am not that computer savvy and would have never found it here. I do not know if one can move it and not have to create another. Thanks. Hope this helps.

This is the 223 and 308. Both are rigged with an economy 3x9-40 Nikon BDC, Warne low rings and a “cut down” Northwoods scope mount. Good scope to barrel clearance. Rear sight can be folded down. When using the low rings be warned that most scopes with a variable power have such a large power knob that it interferes with the hammer. (See pics) Nice walnut stock. Good figure. Very accurate. Henry delivers a lot a value here for under $400. I would like to see Henry come out with this in a “Bull Barrel/Target Trigger/Integrated Scope Mount” model. Thank you.

nicely done indeed .... as you noted from the ones you posted, one of the idiosyncrasies of our forum software is you have to upload the pictures in reverse order .... the work you've done on your single shots is admirable, thanks for taking the time to show your process .... do hope you will feel free to read and post often .... to jump into ongoing threads as well as to start new ones of your own .... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry rifles to our community's total

Welcome to the forum Bear. Its nice that you have that kind of knowledge to do that. I wouldnt attempt that with mine as I havent ever done anything like that. If you were close to myself I would let you do mine. But I had a decent amount of luck with the spring change in mine so I havent done anything else with it.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Welcome aboard! Really interesting post, it sheds some light on why some rifles had acceptable triggers out of the box, and many others don't.

Hello everybody. Thank you for all the friendly welcome and nice comments. I wanted to share with you what I discovered today. I was pondering what I was going to do at the range with 2 guns “that I would like to bring together” and deal with a 20% difference between 2 trigger pulls. Then I started thinking. Why would 2 exact guns vary this much? Then I hit me like a Mac truck. When putting the stock back on the gun I could feel the stock bolt going in the receiver tube threads and through the threaded tube to the inner spring and start putting more and more pressure on the inner spring, hence increasing trigger pull weight. I’ll use a spacer! The bolt has a factory 1/4 inch (black) spacer and a lock washer. I experimented with 3 different spacers 1/4, 7/16/ 5/8 and located them behind the factory one. All these spacers allowed complete bolt to thread contact. Each spacer lowered the poundage about 7 oz. I settled on the 7/16 as the trigger matches the other rifle. If this modification causes no ammo failure I may lower both rifles to under 4lbs. This is a very predictable and ample trigger for me though. I have pics posted and starting with the original 5lbs 5oz the trigger started at. I included a pic of the receiver tube and the spring down in the tube. The next pics are of the spacer and the trigger weight reduction. Thanks again. Hope this helps someone.
